Abstract:

The Royal House of Katsuranomiya owned four chaya (country houses) on the outskirts of Kyoto, and two yashiki (town houses) within the Kyoto boundary. The yashiki were in Imadegawa and Ishiyakushi, and the chaya in Katsura, Misasagi, Nagaoka and Takagamine. Little is known about these buildings except for the Katsura Villa, which has been an object of study for a long time. However, a chaya like the Katsura Villa would only exist with corresponding yashiki in town. Therefore, to understand the villa properly, a comprehensive evaluation of all the buildings of Katsuranomiya is necessary. This thesis aims to study the carpenters who constructed the chaya and yashiki of Katsuranomiya. The results are as follows:

(1) The buildings of the yashiki were constructed by carpenters called Oie-toryo, only when construction expenses were paid by Katsuranomiya.

(2) Oie-toryo was succeeded by the Kitamura family before 1739, and after then by the Kobayashi family. The first Oie-toryo was Kitamura Chikugo, who was employed by Katsuranomiya in 1690 at the latest.

(3) Oie-toryo were in charge of the New Year ceremony called Chona-hajime. It was Katsuranomiya that let Oie-toryo keep the costumes and tools for the ceremony in their charge. These costumes and tools were regarded as, so to speak, the symbol of Oie-toryo.
